Cabinet Styles
When you look at the different slot machines in a casino, you will note that they come in a variety of cabinet configurations. To reduce the confusion, I’ve boiled them all down to the following three basic styles:
Upright
This is a vertical cabinet that can easily be played while standing or sitting. It often comes with a backless stool. In the nicer casinos, the stool will have a back, but it’s still not a very comfortable place to sit for a long period of time. It may or may not have a pull-arm on the right side, and the coin tray is at the bottom. The cabinet appearance can vary in that it may have a sloped or a domed top, but these are just nonfunctional style features. This is a popular cabinet with the casinos because it uses a minimum amount of floor space.
Slope Front
This is a low-profile cabinet, allowing the player to be comfortably seated in a normal-height chair. It has a sloped horizontal playing surface on which the buttons and the reels (or video screen) are located. The coin slot, bill acceptor, and coin tray are all grouped together at the right side of the playing surface. This cabinet style never includes a pull-arm, allowing the cabinets to be abutted next to each other. In some machines, the rear structure can be rather tall because of a top box with additional game features.
Table Top or Bar Top
These are the video units that are built into a bar top. Like the slope front, the coin slot, bill acceptor, and coin tray are all to the right of the video screen. The seat, of course, is a barstool.
